Remark
- On 5 July 1999 the lev was redenominated at 1000:1 with 1 new lev equal to 1 Deutsche Mark. The ISO currency code changed from BGL to BGN. This was in fact the fourth iteration of the "lev".
- In the Bulgarian language the word "leva" is always preceeded by a numeral while "levove" may never be used with one. "Levove" is used either in reference to the national currency (e.g. to be paid in "levove") or to denote the quantity ("a lot of" "a little of" "not enough" and so forth) without specifying the exact amount. Bulgarians ask how many leva you paid and answer "3 leva' "5 leva" and so forth. Generally speaking, however, leva is used in English texts.
